This is one of those events that stays with you for life, everyone will recall where they were and how they found out. Whether you loved MJ or not, nobody can deny the fact he completely changed the way people hear and make music today. Music videos are a major part of every artists' albums but until Michael Jackson started the trend; music videos didn't even exsist. His albums were amazing and he inspires so many people as I'm sure he will continue to do.
So I thought I would also add the moment when I found out the news (just to share but also so I'll never forget, not that I ever could). It was around 23:05 (GMT) on the 25th June 2009 and someone had posted 'R.I.P. Michael Jackson' as their Facebook status. Not for a second did I presume it was the Michael Jackson but then several other status' started to appear with comments such as 'I'm in shock' and 'I can't believe it'. I quickly typed 'Michael Jackson' into Google and hit 'news', still not really thinking he would be dead.
'Michael Jackson Rushed To Hospital', 'Michael Jackson In A Coma'... but still nothing about him being dead. I was tired by this point and thought I should just go to bed as it was late and it didn't seem that MJ was dead, he was in hospital but not dead. However something made me go downstairs as I wanted to check the news. I went into the living room and said to my parents, 'I think Michael Jackson's dead'. My mum laughed and my dad said, 'If he was dead it'd be all over the news', he then clicked onto ITV1 and then on to BBC1, neither of which were showing the news at this time. I was persistant though and said 'Check SKY news', my dad reluctantly did... and there it was, 'Michael Jackson Dead'.
At this point there were only 'unconfirmed' reports from TMZ and nobody knew what was happening. Me and my parents sat there watching the news for half an hour and then L.A. Times confirmed it... Michael Jackson was dead. It was surreal as it was so untimely, nobody seemed prepared for it. The news showed live clips from the UCLA hospital where fans were gathering by the dozens... by 23:40 (GMT) it was completely definite.
I loved Michael Jackson's music and his dancing, I'd always wanted to see him live and was hoping one day that I could. It's such a loss to the world of music and to the world full stop. He'll live on through his music and at this time our hearts should go out to his family. To think as I write this, it's already become yesterday's news but it's strange how many people are deeply effected.
